Since yesterday, I've verified a little more information in my files. The Christian Index Obituaries (1822-1879), p. 169, notes that Patsy Newsom died 11 Sept. 1835 in Putnam Co., GA at the age of 49.John and Martha "Patsy" Newsome had, not 12 children as I stated earlier, but 10 children. They were as follows, in order of birth:Mary (m. William J. Scott), Milly (b. circa(ca.) 1810, m. a Mr. Cheves & later a Mr. Bird), Hosea (m. Martha Broadnax), Joel (b. ca. 1815, m. Elizabeth Figgs?), Dortch (b. ca. 1816, m. Sarah Heath), Angeline (m. Moses J. Barrow), Asa (b. ca. 1825), Doss (b. ca. 1825, he and Asa were twins), John, Jr. (b. ca. 1832), Mary (b. ca. 1835).After Patsy's death, John Newsome married Martha Ward and had 5 more children. There is a great deal of information on this Newsome family in the Georgia Archives.Of particular interest is the a court record found in the Georgia Reports, vol. XXX, p. 291-295, Newsome vs. Cogburn - the children of John Newsome by his 1st. wife, Patsy Alford, contested the Will; eventhough they had already received their share of the estate before their father's death.Unless surpassed in recent years, this was historically the longest court case of it's kind in Georgia history, lasting some 25 years until its conclusion well after the Civil War.Also, John Newsome's name is occasionally followed by the initials esq. (esquire); this generally indicates that the individual practiced law.I have not been able to verify this, but it would not be surprising since John's brother, Joel Dortch Newsome, did practice law and eventually became a judge in Troup Co., GA.Joel D. Newsome's plantation and home were called Nutwood. The home still stands and can been seen on the web at www.lagrangenews.com/History/LaGrangeTour/Nutwood.html.It is said that he brought the first pecan trees into the state of Georgia.I have a great deal of information on the Newsome/Newsom family should you wish to contact me.Also, the Last Will and Testament of William Alford was dated 31 July 1822; and probated 2 May 1825 in Hancock, Co., GA.
