Searching for info on ancestors of my great-great grandmother, MARTHA ALFORD who married MARTIN VAN BUREN WORLEY. She lived near the Chicamauga Battlefield during the Civil War. WORLEY, a Methodist-Episcopal minister, was with the Confederate Army and was wounded at Chicamauga. Martha's father was supposedly a teacher and preacher. According to family lore, Worley crawled up on the Alford's doorstep and Martha nursed him back to health. He left and went home to Dahlonega, GA. to his wife but found she thought him dead, had remarried, and had a child.Martin then went back to Martha and they married. At the time of Martin's death, in 1912, they lived at Cordova, Alabama.
Their children were William Columbus Worley, my great grandfather, and his siblings: Howard "Nick" m. Susie Williamson, Cullman, AL; Frank Worley, street car inspector, Marietta, GA; Emma married Mr. Freeman, Hotel manager; Alice married Ben Johnson, school teacher and farmer, Whitesburg, GA; Sanford married Fanny ?, railroad engineer; Susie married Henry Clark, their daughter Thelma Leahart married Walter Morrow; Ben, a bachelor and railroad man; and another sister who married Frank Craven.
