Linda, Thanks for your reply. I have a deposition from Lawrence County, OH taken in 1857 from Margaret Wilson Alford's brother William who states that Margaret had 6 children:George, William H., Nancy, Risby Jane, Margaret, and Lucretia. He also says Nancy died Aug 1854 and was survived by 2 children: Stephen and Anstress(1826-26 Sep 1881. I have never heard about the Englishman Irwin, but that could explain Stephen's father and his keeping his mother's name. But what about sister Anstress? She was 10 years older. She lived with Stephen in the 1860 and 1880 Lawrence County census. I also have 3 other Alfords in the area who appear to be related to John but not Margaret: John, Stephen, and Sarah who all marry in the 1820's. As far as the name Ward or Hoback is concerned, Stephen's descendants give Hoback as her name in histories and obituaries, but I have found only Ward listed on the online marriages for Lawrence COunty. Possibly there was a transcription error. I haven't been to Lawrence County in 2 years and so I haven't been able to check the original records. I'll be glad to share additional information on the Alfords and WIlsons if you would like to exchange data on your Alford line.
