Military service: joined February 5, 1862, Confederate Regulars, joined in Cusetta Alabama in the AL Mounted Volunteers, Capt. John Thompson's Independent Company, Company "H", Bell's Battalion, obligated for 12 months
Believed by family to have been a Justice of the Peace in Clay Co., AL, this appears to hold true as there are numerous references in the Clay Co. records showing T.L. Alford, as a justice.I have law books believed to have been his dated 1907, 1915 and 1919
Remarried Samantha J. Phillips May 28, 1882.She applied for his Confederate pension on May 7, 1903, I have a copy of the application
Family legend has it that Thomas or his father came from England.
I have the children and grand children of Virgil down to the current generations if you are interested as well as more census images about Virgil and others.
Please note, this family went by many 'nick-names' Virgil was known as Bose and there were others, not as bad as the other side of my family, but some are just plain weird (My grandmother, Ollie V. Alford Taunton went by Bunt)
I do not have anything of Thomas's parentage, but that could be because I have 5 small children and can't get to the genealogy very often, or it could be that he really did come from England and just suddenly appeared in the American records.
I don't know what to do with some of the census images that indicate that Thomas was illiterate, how can you be a Justice of the Peace and have law books and not be able to read?Something is not right here, if you discover what it is, let me know please.
Anything else I can do for you?Are you related to Thomas?
