I would be interested to hear from anyone with family connections to Coleford Gloucestershire England.
Although my family name is spelt ALFORD, I know through my research that the correct spelling is ALLFORD. This error occured in 1913 when my great grand parents were married. I also believe that this is the case with many American Alford families.
As for the name we have to rely on the accuracy of the records that are available to us. The name is mentioned in the doomsday book but may I say the Anglo-Saxons were well established in England long before the Norman invasion and the arrival of Robert-de-Aldeford (Lincoln), John Alforde (Somereset) & John-de-Aldeford (Hereford). There is good cause to believe that all variants of the name less Alvord (Norse)are derived form the the Anglo-Saxon meaning for old ford.
My family tree branches out from Gloucester to Devon, Cornwall, S Wales, Derby, Nottingham, and Yorkshire.
