I haven't worked on this family much, was trying to tie Nancy Unknown Alford to the Roswell Alford family. I believe her daughter was Elizabeth Alford who married Wm Henry Blackwell in Calhoun Co, IL in 1856.
In the 1850 and 1860 census, Lewis Swarnes, Emily (Alford), and Roswell (son) are living in Hamburg, Calhoun Co, IL. In 1870 Emily Swarnes still in Hamburg with a Wm A R Alford, 14 yrs, b in MO living with her.I think he was a son of Phily A Alford and his wife, Julia. Phily Alford was a riverboat captain ( I think Lewis Swarnes was too if I remember correctly). The probate files for both Phily and Julia can be found in St Louis, MO. They can be viewed online. They are both buried in Hamburg Cemetery: Alford, Capt. Pliny A1819 - July 16, 1867 Alford, Julia ______ - Feb 23, 1862
Emily E. Swarnes married James Patterson in 1874 in Calhoun Co, IL. I didn't find any IL marriage for Roswell Swarnes. The Calhoun County Cemetery book shows 3 Swarnes buried in Hamburg Cemetery: Swarnes, FrancesApr 15, 1849 - Feb 10, 1853 Swarnes, Lewis Phillips Nov 20, 1849 (only date listed) Swarnes, Roswell L. Dec 17, 1843 - Apr 10, 1853 (if this is the son of Lewis and Emily the death date must have been read incorrectly because he was alive in the 1860 census).
If you write to the Calhoun Co Courthouse, Circuit Clerks Office in Hardin, IL you might find a great amount of information from the following probate files indexed in Bk A: Swarnes, Lewis Box# 37 File# 1, Emily E. Swarnes, Adm Swarnes, Lewis Box# 40 File# 8, James Patterson, Adm Swarnes, R. L. Box# 40 File# 21, P. A. Alfred, Adm
