Dear Meredith, It seems likely that Avey Lofley was the daughter of Daniel as Wright Lofley, Pitman Lofley, and Jesse Lofley were all found in Jefferson Co. GA in 1803-1805 according to Joseph T. Maddox's INFORMATION ON SOME GEORGIA PIONEERS, 1972. It says Pitman's wife was Needham Alford which of course is incorrect but I have never known anything about Penelope. Do you have any idea who her parents were supposed to be or when she married Pitman?Don't know if I can be of much help but this is what we know about Needham Alford that married Avey Lofley/Lofley:he seems to have been the son of Sarah ______ Alford/Alfred of Wayne Co. NC who had sons Needham Wyat,Jason, Furney, Handy, William and John. Her Alford husband? appears to have died before John was born and soon after she married Gabriel Coley who was a widower. She had three more children--Courtney, Sally and Gabriel Coley. Gabriel Coley had a Wayne Co. NC will, dated 1815 and Sally Coley had a Wayne Co. NC will dated 1839.We are slowly piecing together facts about these children.Needham (may have been called Wyatt) is believed to have been the husband of Avey Lofley and had Matthew M., A. J. , Green B., William A., John W., Needham D., Thomas I/J, and Nancy.Needham died before 1852 in Jefferson Co. GA or at least he was listed as being "of Jefferson Co. GA and deceased" in an 1852 court case in Austin TX when his brother John's estate settlement was contested by his half-sisters in behalf of all of the siblings. This is where Needham's children are named. They seem to have been alive in 1852 but we don't know where they were living. If you have any additional information on either Penelope's family or Needham's (why are they not on the Jefferson Co. GA census?), I would be very happy to have you share that with us.At least one of Needham's brothers was in Florida, at least for a while.
