Are our families connected?I've seen an online obituary for my gggrandfather John Alger(it says the source is the "Thorp Courier" - Thorp, Clark County, Wis.Among family members attending the funeral are listed three brothers NELSON, JOSEPH and WESLEY "who live near Omro" and a sister Mrs. ELIZA WILBUR of Omro(could this be the ELLA you've mentioned?). - Of course it also mentions his wife, son George, daughter Mrs. ELIZA ELMENDORF and brogher-in-law Eugene Hoffman and his wife, of Meadow Valley, Wis.
Add'l info from obit. - b.12/7/1838 near Dunfrees, Canada West (I suspect that may be Dumfries) - m. Arcelia Huffman at Wexford,Winnebago, Wis 2/7/1866 and he d.9/26/1890 It says he moved to Thorp three years prior to his death. - The obit. also says he left home alone when he was very young and quite a number of years later (in WI) someone mistook him for his brother and then took him to see his mother and three brothers who were not far away.
1880 Census puts him in Rushford,Winnebago,WI - says his parents were born in VT - John born in Canada - - Arcelia and her parents born in NY - daughter ELMA JANE age 11 (could this be ELIZA in obit?)and son GEORGE H. age 9 born in WI
1880 census for JOSEPH shows wife Persis - shows both Joseph and his parents born in Canada - Persis born in VT but her parents born in Canada - no children listed - it puts them in Poygan, Winnebago, WI
1880 census for WESLY shows wife Jennie - shows Wesly(or Wesley as in obit) and his parents as born in Canada - Jennie born in NY and her parents birthplaces unknown.Children listed are sons George age 8 - Jessie age 6 and daughter Mabel age 2 - it puts them in Poygan, Winnebago, WI
1880 census - I haven't found NELSON or the mother.I don't think all of the timeframes in the obit. tie out but it would indicate the mother was alive and in WI in the mid to late 1860's.
I feel I'm at a bit of a dead end because I haven't been able to find who John's parents are.I'm rather new at all of this so any help, any connection that might lead me a little farther will be appreciated.
(My grandfather and father were both born in Thorp - My grandfater moved his family to Kaukauna, Outagamie, WI when my father was 4, in 1923.)
