My grandfather, Sanford Tompkins Terry, was born to Green B. and Emma Terry of Bedford County, VA, about 6 June 1880. His mother was reported to be an "Aliff". I knew the "Sanford" in my grandfather's name came from "Sanford W. Terry" (his grandfather), but could not account for the "Tompkins".
The recent addition of the 1880 U.S. Census to http://www.familysearch.orghttp://www.familysearch.org (LDS web site) lists an "A. B. T. Ailiff" household (A.B.T. is age 59 and is a farmer) in the Staunton census district, immediately followed by a "Cizero Ailiff" household (Cizero is age 32 and is a farmer), immediately followed by the Green B. Terry (and Emma) household (Green is age 24 and is a farm laborer, while Emma is age 22).
Civil War service records for A.B.T. Ailiff alternately list him as "Tompkins" Ailiff, so I'm naturally interested in any information linking him to Emma Aliff/Ailiff Terry.
