So you are James Son!Pleased to meet you! I am Roy Alvin's son, Roy Eugene (hence the nickname "Gene")
My dad is your first cousin.I am your first cousin, once removed.Dad is still alive and doing well for his age.He had a stroke in 1997 but recovered fairly well. His sister Naoma is in a nursing home in Kentucky, also from a stroke, her body failing, but still of sound mind.Sadly, the youngest, Wayne, is dying of cancer. He lives in Ohio and has 3 sons and 1 daughter (Ronald, Jack, Rick, Cathy)I think all of them have children now except Ronnie.I have 1 daughter, Rhiannon Aliff.
I attended Harry's funeral.I also attended my Grandfather Roy Lee's funeral in 1966, but was too young to clearly remember any of the people I met at these sad events.Perhaps you were one of them that I met?
I have no doubt that the lines are recorded in several places, including someone's bible. But I assure you, it will definitely show James Edward being the son of John and Julia Ann Thompson. The problem is, James E. (Steve) was born in September 1880, and I have come across a death record showing his legal father John dying at a very young age in 1878.If this record is accurate, then it is impossible for John to be his biological father .......and your G-Grandmother Julia was left alone at a VERY young age with a house full of children. It makes perfect sense that she would have taken up with someone else in the year or two following her husband's untimely death. If this second marriage was never made official (as was common then), and a pregnancy resulted, James may have assumed the name Aliff because of the stigma attached to such things in those times. This theory might also explain where the nickname Steve came from, who knows?
The answers are always out there, but sometimes they take a little digging.Unfortunately, the best source for this information, the 1890 census records, were destroyed in a fire. These records probably showed 10-year-old James Edward (Steve) with some of his brothers and sisters and his mother Julia, living in a household with a man of a different last name.
Attached to this e-mail is a picture I have of Steve & Sippie with one of their sons.Is this Harry or is it your father James?
I also have some pictures of Cecil with son Everett Lee, and some other pix of Sippie and the house they lived in.I will try to scan them and send them in the future. I have been in touch with a number of Aliff, Steele, & Jefferson descendants.
Do you know of any direct male descendants of your grandfather James' older Brothers? If so, a simple DNA test comparing your Y chromosome with theirs would confirm James true identity.
In any event, THANK YOU for your help with this. Please keep in touch and let me know what you find out ... and I will do the same.
