I've since found more info on James Allan. His parents were James Allan and Ellen M. ?James (sr.) was born in Scotland ~1819-1820 and Ellen was born ~1822-1824, also in Scotland, according to the ages given in the 1860 and 1870 census records. They were probably married bef. 1847, and emigrated to the U.S. between 1853 and 1855.
James and Ellen's family farmed in Ripon, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, and a William Allan lived with them, age 36, in the 1860 census.I believe William may have been James' brother.
In the 1870 census, the children's birthplaces indicate that the family moved to Minnesota by 1862, but moved on to Union Township, Worth County, Iowa by 1868.
Children (according to these 2 census records)were: NameGenderDoBBirthplace
