I believe a good case can be made for the identity of Daniel Newton Allard, b Feb 1826, later of Meigs Co, OH, who married Almena C. S. Saunders in Gallia Co in 1859, as the son of Samuel and Lorana Max(s)on Allard of Morgan Co, OH.Although most trees I have seen have the Daniel Allard, b 22 Oct 1821, who married Susan Swope and died in Jackson Co, KS as the son of Samuel and Lorana, I believe they are in error.I have designated the two as 'Daniel Newton' and 'Daniel' in the following.
In the Portrait and Biographical Record of Effingham, Jasper and Richland Counties Illinois section on Reuben L. Allard, who was still alive at the time, his siblings are listed in order, with Daniel falling between Shadrach, b 1824, and William, b 1828. Daniel Newton was born Feb 1826 according to the 1900 census while Daniel would be impossibly crammed between the oldest child Lorana, born ca 1820 and Samuel, born 21 Feb 1822, just four months after Daniel.
Daniel lists his parents in 1880 as both born in Ohio. Daniel Newton, while inconsistent between 1880 and 1900, gives NH and ME for his father; and MA and NY for his mother. NH and NY are the ones given by Samuel and Lorana in their own census records. Catherine Allard Thissell's death cert also lists Maine as her father's birthplace.
Daniel Newton Allard was a dentist who lived in Morgan Co in the 1860 and 1870 census, with wife Almena. According to the Athens Messenger newspaper, he took his practice from Morgan Co to Coolville, Athens Co in 1875.He and Almena are listed in the 1880 census for Coolville. The Messenger again reports him moving his practice to Middleport, Meigs Co, OH in 1881. He and Almena are in the 1900 census for Pomeroy, Meigs Co.
In the 1850 census, Daniel Newton is listed without his middle name in Gallipolis, Gallia Co, OH, living with Hannah Russell, sister of Lorana Maxon, and next door to Hiram Maxon, Lorana's brother. His marriage to Almena Saunders in Gallia Co is then not surprising for someone from a Morgan Co family. Shadrach, another son of Samuel and Lorana, also lived for a long period in Gallia Co. A number of the Washington Co Maxons moved to Gallia Co while Lorana moved north to Morgan Co with Samuel.
