Etienne is a very common French name.Several of my very French ancestors have the name Etienne. I looked it up for you:
Etienne e-tienne, eti(en)-ne as a boy's name is pronounced eh-t'-YIN. It is of French origin. Variant of Stephen (Greek) "crown".
There were also four men with the surname Etienne that pioneered Quebec in the 1600s.Claude Etienne from Lorraine, Philippe Etienne from Saintonge and his French faher was Mathurin that never left France, then there was Guillaume son of Louis from Normandie and finally Gilles-Denis Etienne (sieur de Clerin en Bourget).
There were many French Canadian fur traders that settled all over the states.Their trade took them every where there were beavers, not just in Wisconsin.
At one time the Kings from the same family ruled several countries.King Charlemagne's family ruled France, Italy and many other countries, so I am sure that names like Etienne travelled all over Europe.
