Learned the following on a recent visit to Bacon's Castle.Built in 1665 by Arthur Allen and called Allen's Brick House until 100yrs. later.It was occupied by rebellious troops during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676.
Arthur Allen (1602-1669) was from Droitwich in Worcestershire,England.He was the younger son of John Allen.Parish records in St. Andrews Parish, Droitwich, Worcestshire reveal that he was christened on 23 Oct. 1608. John Allen was a stockholder of the Virginia Co. 23 May 1609.
Arthur Allen was granted 200 acres in James City Co., VA on 14 March 1649 for transporting Alice Tucker (his wife) and 3 servants: William Eyres, William Moss, and Thomas Rustell.He bought an additional 500 acres and built his house. Arthur Allen was one of the wealthest men in James City Co.He was a merchant/planter and a Justice of the Peace in 1652.He made his will on 10 March 1669 and died in June, leaving his house to his son, Arthur Allen II.His other children were Joan, Mary and Elizabeth.
