John S. Allen married Laney E. Peters (daughter of Nathaniel Peters, d. 3/20/1835?) on 6/11/1835 in Columbus (Muscogee Co.) GA; marriage was performed by Rev. (Thomas) Samford. The 1850 census of Muscogee Co. lists John S. Allen, 42, carpenter, North Carolina, along with Mrs. L.E., 34; John (S. Jr.), 14; Thomas, 12; William, 6; Mary, 4; and Joseph, 2. Apparently living with them were Jourden McLendon, 26, carpenter and Susan Wilkinson, 60, North Carolina. John S. Allen also appears in the index to the 1860 and 1870 Muscogee Co. Censuses. John S. Allen Jr. died of consumption in Aug. 1865 at the age of 29 (he had been a lieutenant and adjutant with the 2nd. GA of the Columbus Guards). Other citations for John S. Allen (from extracts from the Columbus Enquirer and other sources) include: Fourth Corporal, Columbus Guards, 1836; business license ("dray"), 1836, 1837; citizen patrol, 1838-44; hook & ladder co., 1843; board of health, 1846, alderman, 2nd ward, 1858; Independent Home Guard, sgt., 1863.
I believe this to be the same John Allen who was the son of a Capt. Allen of Georgetown SC and my ggg-grandmother Dorothy McDonald. This Capt. Allen was lost at sea, and Dorothy married William Goodman (my ggg-grandfather) in 1810 somewhere in NC. William raised John Allen as his stepson along with the children he had with Dorothy. This Goodman family settled in Greeneville TN around 1816-17, where Dorothy died in 1825, and then moved to Augusta GA. According to our family tradition, the half-brother John Allen eventually went to Columbus GA, where he was "successful in Business". This certainly seems to match the citations for John S. Allen listed above (note that his age in the 1850 census indicates that he was born ca. 1808, which matches our family tradition that he was a small child when Dorothy married William in 1810.
Does anyone have this John S. Allen in their line, or know anything more about him?
