Dear Bill: I saw your posting of Feb. 22,, 2001 asking for info on the above.I don't know whether the following information will doyou any good.In fact, I don't know if it is correct and you may already have it.I picked it up from various places. Some of the sources are contradictory.
DAVID ALLEN married Apphia Fauntelroy Lewis on April 29,1783 in Halifax Co., Va.
DAVID ALLEN was the son of Julius Allen, Sr. of Henrico County, Virginia. The first transaction relating to Julius Allen, Sr. (in the records of Henrico Co. VA) was in 1722.Julius was the son of Edmund Allen and probably Mary Allen (but Edmund Allen may have been married more that once).Julius, Sr. was the brother of (at least) Littleberry, James and Isham Allen.
Julius' will mentions 5 children: John Allen, Julius Allen, Jr., DAVID ALLEN, Charles Allen and Elizabeth M. Allen.
David Allen inherited from father Julius Sr.½ interest in 1000 acres. It is noted in the attached that David Allen, son of Julius Allen Sr., "moved to Halifax County 1786..."
Edmund Allen > Julius Allen, Sr. > David Allen >David Bushrod Allen.
David Bushrod Allen married Martha Battle Norfleet on April 17, 1821 in Montgomery County (Clarksville) TN.The second child of David Bushrod Allen and Martha Norfleet is VIRGINIA LEWIS ALLEN HOPSON (wife of Morgan Hopson).
The 6th child of David and Martha Allen was also named Julius Allen. This Julius Allen wrote a letter in June of 1891 which says in part:
"David Bushrod Allen's father was David Allen of Cumberland County, Virginia, who soon After his marriage moved to PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA. where David B. was born on 27th of Sept. 1789.David Allen had six sons who lived to be grown, to wit, Lewis, Julius, Fauntleroy, Felix, Christian and David B., two daughters, to wit, Sallie and Mary.... Martha Battle Allen's father was James Norfleet of Nansemond County, Virginia. He moved to the Red River country Tennessee when there were but a few camps and log huts where Nashville now stands....James married Sallie Lawson of North Carolina by whom he had one son, Willie Lawson and three daughters, Martha Battle, Sallie Williamson and Lucy Louise.Martha B. married David B. Allen....David B. Allen's mother was APPHIA ALLEN nee LEWIS.Apphia Lewis's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Bushrod. The Lewis family were noted in Virginia for their wealth and high sense of honor...David Allen...entered the army during the Revolutionary War, where he was captured and sent to England and kept for a long time, after he was exchanged he returned and joined his Command and won some official position.I do not know what position he held, but I think it a Sergeant or perhaps Lieutenant-He was always know as Colonel Allen, but I don't think he held the rank of Colonel.I think he was given the title through courtesy.David Allen was a man of great wealth for his day and time, but like nearly all of his descendants, was a great spend-thrift.He died at the age of 48 years and left his estate $25,000 in debt, but my grandmother, Apphia, with the assistance of her cousin, John Lewis, her Co-Executor, worked the estate out of debt and divided between her heirs 160 Negroes....
If you want to send me your e-mail address, I'll send you some of the source material-if you want.
