Mary - I checked out some names and Ashbel (Ashabel, Ashbell,etc) was a popular Biblical name, so I think you have the correct spelling. It is also connected with people in CT and VT in the mid 1700's... didn't find Ashbell Allen in my book ALLEN MEMORIAL -
