Thanks for your reply. Since my posting I have found some more information on James T. Allen.I found his obituary in the New Albany Daily Ledger, June 4, 1864.It lists him as Capt. James T. Allen. He was a memeber of the Mississippi Marine Brigade & the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, New Albany Lodge No. 10.
His obituary says that James died of Typhoid Fever and at the time of his death he was commanding a boat. The obituary also says that he was 55 making his birth date around 1809.Although it says he was "an old citizen" I cannot find him listed in the Indiana census prior to 1850.In the 1850 census there is a 14 year girl named Mary Ann Allen living with him and her place of birth was Iowa. This is where I loose track of him.I am going to have to spend more time looking in Iowa.
I don't know if any of this information helps make a connection to the Lewis that you mention.I know that James and his second wife Rebecca had a son born about 1859 named Lewis.
