Your probably could hear me laughing all the way from California when I read your message about the Allens.I have been searching for George Allen b. circa 1805 in VA or TN, depending on the census, married to a Lina, Sina or Paulina, depending on the record.I believe he comes to TX in 1831 in the DeWitt Colony with wife and two children.I know his daughter Martha Jane Allen, my ggg grandmother, was born in 1827 in TN, all other children I know about were born in TX.I have also suspected Native American lineage because he was a famous Commanche fighter in Texas, and on one account brought back scalps from Commanche who stole his horses. He went in the Civil War in his late 50's.He is also in an account of being the head of a group of vigilates that broke out a group of horse rustlers that were being held in Uvalde, TX at Fort Inge and lynched them. However, in the account he was referred to as "a respected citizen". Both he and his grandson, George Hammer, were tried with assault with intent to commit murder; and both were acquitted. On the good side, though, his grandchildren fought to keep him as their guardian instead of an uncle.
What is so amazing is that I am descended from Nathaniel Wofford, also.Meley Wofford came to this part of Texas a little after George Allen.Believe it or not, George Allen's son-in-law, Thomas Hammer, first married his daughter Martha Jane, and then after she died, married Martha Emeline Thompson. She was the sister of Meley Wofford's son-in-law, Gideon Thompson. It can get very confusing.
My maiden name is Thompson.I am going to visit Texas the first week in October, and hopefully I will be able to clear up this Allen mystery. So much has been written on the Thompsons, O'Bryants, Woffords and Johnsons. The Allens were in Texas the earliest; I just can't figure out why nobody is ever searching for them and won't talk about them.Maybe you have given me a hint. Would love to hear from anybody who has any info on this line.
By the way I received some well-documented info from Buddy Wofford, and he definitely believes that Little Flower, Comfort Snow, and Lydia Hopper were all involved with the same Nathaniel Wofford.I guess the confusing part is that Comfort Snow was involved with another Wofford before ours.
