Carol I have a clipping from an old news paper from Grand Rapids Michigan or in the Kent County area of Michigan. It reads:
"SOLDIER WHO FLED REBEL PRISON DIES" William H. Allen, 86, was amoung first to enter state home here. William H. Allen one of the firstCivil war veterans to enter the Michigan Soldiers home, died Saturday night at his home on Coit-rd. He enlisted in the 4th Michigan Infrantry at Adrian Michigan in 1861.He was taken prisoner on the second day of the Gettysburg battle and later escaped from Anderson prison and returned home at Hastings Michigan.He had resided in Grand Rapids for 48 years. He leaves His widow, Mary E. Allen; three daughters. Mrs J. B. Roche of Jacksonville Florida, Mrs William Allen of Mobile Alabama, and Mrs. Joseph R. Clark of Sparta Michigan:Three sons Fred Allen of North Park Michigan, George H. Allen of Leland Mississippi and John A. Allen of Pontiac Michigan: fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be at the Soldiers home.
My husband is related to the Clarks,Grace Allen ( daughter to Willian H. Allen)was his grand mother.
