From 1784, in Elizabethtown Township, Leeds County, Ontario (present area of Brockville, ON, across the St. Lawrence from Morristown NY),Weston Allen lived with wife Hannah(Possible Children:Sarah (m Nicholas Mosher); Ruth (m Rice Honeywell); Ebenezer (son Weston Ebenezer b 1814); Phoebe; Anne (m Umphrey/Humphrey?); Theodorus; Weston; Abel;?George (m Sarah Cole, children: Ira, Permelia); ?Henry (wife Phoebe, child Ira.In 1804, Henry was 29).One of Weston [Sr]'s sons (Theodorus or Weston Jr?) m Margaret Armstrong, had children Weston [III], Theodorus and Susannah, and was apparently dead by 1801 when Margaret remarried.
In 1789, Weston [Sr.], Weston [Jr.], Theodorus and Ebenezer were all landowners in Elizabethtown. Then Ebenezer moved to Haldimand Township, Nortumberland Co., ON and was living there in 1848 aged 'over 60'.Part ofhis Elizabethtown land was owned by George in 1803.Weston [Jr] disappears from records.Theodorus was in a 1798 census of a neighbouring township and then disappears from view.
Theodorus Allen Died 1829-09-18 Otsego Co., NY, aged 47(A Collection of Abstracts from Otsego Co. Newspaper Obits from 1808-1875 comp. by Gertrude Audrey Barber, listed on Allens Stuck in NY State Otsego Co. page 2001-03-04) but is too young to have been the Theodorus who held land in Elizabethtown from 1784.
Weston Srsold most of his land 1803-06 and still appeared in censuses until 1809 but in the next census (1812), Abel is listed as head of the family. So presumably Weston Sr died 1809-1812.Both Weston [III] and Weston Ebenezer were still living in Ontario in 1871.Weston Sr seems to have had adult and married children by 1784 but I have not been able to find his age.A posting on the Gage Board at Rootsweb by Leslie Wilson 2001/07/21 says that he was born 1732-09-01Dartmouth NY/MA? US.
"Return of Families Arrived in Twps 6, 7, and 8 since 1st of March last, New Oswegatchie 1785-04-15:Mrs. Allen; woman, 2 boys aged over 10,1 girl over 10, 3 girls under 10; [from] Vermount [sic]; Provisioned on order from Capt Jones; Brought from the Colonys by her husband"Was this Weston's family or Theodorus's or Ebenezer's?A report from the Haldimand Papers of October 1784 lists "Refugee Western [sic] Allen 1 man, 1 woman, 2 boys above 10 yrs, 2 girls above 10, 2 girls below 10, total 8"The family size and sexes are the same, and the ages roughly so.Only the dates are questionable.If'Mrs. Allen' was Weston's wife, Hannah, then the family arrived from Vermont.
By the way, there was also another Ebenezer Allan, who lived for a time in the Genesee area of NY and was the 1st settler at what is now Rochester NY, a riotous character who had 3 concurrent wives, including Kyen-da-nent (Sally) and Milly Gregory.According to The Dictionary of Canadian Biography, he was born in 1752 in Morristown NJ and died in 1813 in Delaware Township, ON (near London, Ontario).
Given the recurrence of the relatively unusual names Weston and Ebenezer, I think our Allens must be connected in some way--brothers? cousins? nephew? son?--but I have no information that would confirm that.Does your theory on the ancestry of George make any connections with my Allens?
