Florence, our library is small, so I didn' find anything specific on William Burgess Allen. What i did find I am typing in below - perhaps you already have a lot of this information, but can use it to confirm what you have.

Try locating obituary in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY.,Also put query on Burke County, NC at USGENWEB...Ask someone to look up birth records of 1841.I looked up b irth records from 1800 to 1900 in Caldwell County, NC and there was no Ananias Allen or William Burgess Allen listed.
Also try with the library in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY:
lists of police officers and firemen - perhaps his "sign up" papers will reveal his parents and where they were from.
RE: "BELIEVE the Burgess Allen, 10 yrs old, listed with Ananias Allen in 1850 Census" - what state?
IT IS POSSIBLE: he had first wife and Rose was second wife since she is listed as 25 years older than William Burgess Allen.
Probably the Burgess came from his mother's side - that is why I listed the Burgess's family of Wilkes and Burke County.
Help is probably most likely at:
USGENWEB: Wilkes County, NC
Burke County, NC
I live about 45 min. from library in Burke County (next to us) but haven't plans to go there anytime soon - if you can't find what you need on web sites and by query to USGENWEB, let me know and I will try in the spring to get over to the library there -
I CAN CALL THEM AND ASK WHAT KIND OF RECORDS THEY HAVE - If they have births from 1800 to 1900 for the county, they might have William Burgess Allen listed.
Hope all this is not too confusing and will back up what you have
and help in some way. And also help someone else working on Allens in NC, TN, KY, and MS, AL
