I'm not related to this family, but while searching through records of the Library of Congress on-line, I came across the WANTED advertisement for this group of men who murdered a court judge. Here is the text of that poster:
$3,500 Reward Offered
($3,000 by the Governor of Virginia and $500 by the County of Carroll)
For the Arrest, Dead or Alive, of the Following parties, to be Distributed as follows:
SIDNA ALLEN $1,000, CLAUD ALLEN $800, FRIEL ALLEN $500, WESLEY EDWARDS $800, and SIDNA EDWARDS $300, for the cold-blooded and brutal murder of T. L. Massie, Circuit Judge, Wm. M. Foster, Commonwealth Attorney, Louis S. Webb, Sheriff, Augustus Fowler, a juror, and Miss Nancy Elizabeth Ayers, a witness, which occurred at Hillsville, Va., on March 14th,1912.
SIDNA ALLEN--Age 46. Height 5 ft. 9 or 10 inches. Weight 145 to 155 lbs., light brown hair, mixed with grey. Blue eyes. Long hatchet face, long nose. Complexion rather sallow. Smooth shaven. Very large mouth, Left handed, and reported shot through the muscle of left arm, and also slight wound in left side, rather in front. Two gold bridges in the upper part of his mouth, one with four teeth, and the other with five, and both running back from the two eye-teeth and anchored by hoods and crowns.
CLAUDE ALLEN--Son of Floyd Allen. Age 22, weight 190 to 200 lbs. Height about 6 feet. Hair black, and the ends slightly curly. Rather dark complexion. Eyes grey, or what some people might call blue. Teeth good and regular. Heavy black eye brows, extending across forehead above the bridge of the nose. Large round face. Prominent cheek bones. Considered rather good looking, though his features are a little rough. Smooth shaven.
FRIEL ALLEN--Son of Jack Allen and nephew of Sidna Allen. Age 18. Height about 5 ft. 7 or 7 1/2 inches. Weight 130 to 135 lbs. Slender build, light hair, blue eyes, complexion fair, features about regular.
WESLEY EDWARDS--Nephew of Sidna Allen, and cousin of Claude and Friel Allen. Age 20 years, Height 5 ft. 7 or 8 inches. Stocky build. Weight 160 to 170 lbs. Dark hair, slightly curly at ends. Gray eyes. Features regular. Complexion fair and face flushed. Smooth shaven.
SIDNA EDWARDS--Brother of Wesley Edwards. Age 22. Height about 6 feet. Weight 180 to 190 pounds. Dark hair. Eyes blue. Complexion fair. Features regular. Smooth shaven. At present limps slightly on account of one of his feet having been scalded recently while operating an illicit distillery.
All of these men are very dangerous characters, and no chances should be taken in arresting them. The two Edwards brothers are very illiterate, and have spent the most of their lives operating illicit distilleries. The Allens are men of considerable means, and will have sufficient money to dress neatly, and to travel in any way they wish, and will be more than likely to furnish the Edwards with the necessary funds. It is not known whether they left their homes on horseback or on foot. However, the presumption is that some of them, if not all, may have horses. They may be travelling together but are more than likely to have disbanded, and travelling alone, or possibly in pairs. It is not known what their destination will be, though some of them, if not all, may try to reach the Western country where they have relatives and friends. The Allens, and Sidna especially, are men of more than ordinary intelligence. Some of them have been in trouble various times. and are accustomed to scouting. They are all heavily armed, and some of them have Colt's Automatic Revolvers, and they may also have Winchesters. Sidna Allen has been associated with others at various times in making counterfeit gold coins.
