Hi Mike, I've seen the Sarah Elizabeth LILES name connected to John Pitts BEASLEY before. In fact, if you check the World Connect trees at Rootsweb for Barnett Browning you'll see several trees with variations & some show his mother as Elizabeth BARNETT, while others show Sarah LILES.I question the sources for some of the trees, as they appear to have just "copied" from someone else's information.I personally would like to know WHO & HOW the Sarah LILES name came to be connected to John Pitts BEASLEY in the first place.I can't answer your question regarding her name, as to whether it was a previous married name. It's even possible that Elizabeth BARNETT & Sarah Elizabeth LILES could be the same person. So many people went by their middle names, which certainly adds for confusion for future descendants researching the family lines. But it does seem logical to me that because of Barnett Beasley's unusual first name, it's very likely that he WAS named for his mother's maiden name.
With that in mind, here is what I'm showing in my files, but I will continue to research it, compare, evaluate, contact people for source documentation & continue to determine the true answers.I would suggest that when you come across conflicting names & data, that you record both, along with the sources, which should help down the road to sort out the "rest of the story".
John Pitts BEASLEY b-abt. 1739 Amelia Co. VA s/o Will Pitt/Unknown wife (Will b-Nov. 15, 1708 Westminister, Great Britain d-May 11, 1778 Hayes in Kent, England) m- Abt. 1759 VA to Elizabeth BARNETT b-abt 1745 d-Before March 11, 1815 Warren Co. NC
I have 21 pages on John Pitts BEASLEY & family, which included information on militaryrecords, land purchases, census data, wills, etc. that was sent to me by one of my Burnett cousins.Too much to print here.I have a printed off copy, but the original e-mail was lost during a virus last month.Since I do know which Burnett cousin sent it to me, I should be able to find out again exactly where she found this greatly informative compiled material. Some of this material was source referenced as by Leonard J. McCown & Harold L. Beasley.Leonard has an extensive web site, so it's possible it came from there. I don't have the web link handy just now, as I lost all my book marked "Favorites" in my virus crash.
Speaking of John Pitts Beasley's will, it names his wife as Elizabeth Beasley. The original will is in the County Records of the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh. It is also recorded in Will Book 6: 97-98.Transcribed from a photocopy of the original loose will.
Also in this material is reference to a second marriage by Elizabeth (Barnett) Beasley to Abraham PUCKETT on May 29, 1805.
Till later.... Bobbi Harrison Beasley/Burnett descendant
