Hi Kay.I found out this winter that I have two ALLEN families on my DEXTER family tree.Mary ALLEN b1763 in RI married Joseph DEXTER, b1764 in RI.Mary was born in Cumberland, RI, and married there in 1785.(Cumberland used to be part of MA.)While trying to find out who her parents were, I came across a mention that her father might have been the Capt. Nehemiah ALLEN who was listed in the "1777 Military Census for Cumberland, RI" and listed as being Age 60+.I found a Nehemiah ALLEN who was born along the MA/RI border in 1715, who is probably him.
But, I also have seen several Nehemiah ALLEN's in the 1700's, so I'm not sure he is the correct father for Mary. And, I also have a possible other daughter, Sarah, b1757, and a possible son, Nehemiah ALLEN, born in 1756.The Nehemiah born in 1715 might have married Abigail WATERMAN around 1745.
FYI:Joseph and Mary (ALLEN) DEXTER moved to Killingly, CT, shortly after they married and raised 9 children there.Their son, Marvin DEXTER, married Mary ALLEN, daughter of John and Anna (HAVEN) ALLEN, married in Brooklyn, CT, in 1794.(Do not yet know his line.)
I am about to go to the LDS web site and make a list of all the Nehemiah ALLEN's in the 1700's and where they married or settled.
