Hi Jim.I know you posted this information in 2000, but I'd like to mention the ALLEN families in Windham County, CT.
I have been looking into the DEXTER families in Killingly, CT, for a couple of years.Unfortunately, there were two John DEXTER's born in Killingly in the 1830's, and I picked the wrong one. This winter I discovered the right one, and I have discovered that both his mother and his grandmother had the maiden name, Mary ALLEN.
I started a little (on-line) research then and have resumed it this week.I have discovered that the wife of Joseph DEXTER of Smithfield, RI, was the Mary ALLEN born in Cumberland, RI, in 1763.And, she might be the daughter of (Capt.) Nehemiah ALLEN born ~1715 along the MA/RI border.I was told yesterday that he was the son of Nehemiah ALLEN, who was the son of Samuel ALLEN, who was the son of Samuel ALLEN of Braintree, MA.
Joseph and Mary (ALLEN) DEXTER married in 1785 in Cumberland, RI, and that year moved to Killingly, CT.They raised 9 children there, and their youngest was Marvin DEXTER.Marvin DEXTER married Mary Ann ALLEN in ~1832.Marvin was born in 1805 and Mary was born in Brooklyn, CT, in 1807.Mary was the daughter of John and Anna (HAVEN) ALLEN who had been married in Brooklyn, CT, in 1794.
I am curious whether this John ALLEN was the one born in nearby Pomfret, CT, in 1776.The John ALLEN born in Pomfret was reportedly the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (WARNER) ALLEN.And, reportedly, Joseph was the son of Benjamin and Mehitable (INGALLS) ALLEN.And, reportedly, Benjamin was the son of Daniel and Hannah (DAVIS) ALLEN.And, reportedly, Daniel was the son of Joseph and Hannah (SABIN) ALLEN.And, reportedly, Joseph was the son of James and Ann (GUILD?GOULD) ALLEN, and James was the James ALLEN, b~1609 from the Dedham, MA, area.
Thank you for all the ALLEN information you posted almost 3 years ago.If I am understanding it correctly, this James ALLEN was born ~1614 in Colby, England, and he probably came over with his father (Deacon) Samuel ALLEN in 1630 on the "Mary and John" and this group of people came over as part of "Mr. Hooker's Company."And, that they eventually following the Reverend Thomas Hooker from Boston/Cambridge, MA, to CT.And, that this Samuel ALLEN is the one who helped to found Windsor, CT.*
You stated that your ancestors were Joseph and Hannah (SABIN) ALLEN, through a son? who went to PA.If my "assumptions" are correct, that the family I am looking for is descended from their son, Daniel ALLEN.This Daniel was living in Pomfret, CT (Windham County)*
*Just to help me understand, I believe Windsor is in Hartford County and Windham and Pomfret are in Windham County.
*Another on-line record showed a Joshua ALLEN and his son, John ALLEN, who bought a large farm in Windham, CT, in 1695.It was suggested that this Joshua ALLEN was descended from George ALLEN who had settled in Yarmouth, MA.
(Descendants of George's son, Samuel, seem to have gone to Windham, CT, also.)
****My amateur opinion is that on-line researchers are confusing the towns of Windsor and Windham, CT.Although I just looked at a map, and I see that Windsor is in Hartford County (on CT River, north of Hartford), and Windham is not too far east of there in Windham County.
But, beyond that it appears (from above DEXTER information) that .. for my family-tree, the Mary ALLEN born in Cumberland, RI, appears to be descended from the Samuel ALLEN of Braintree, MA, through his son, Samuel. And, that the Mary ALLEN born in Brooklyn, CT, in 1807 appears to be descended from Samuel ALLEN of Braintree, MA, through his son, James ALLEN (born ENG).
I'm sorry if I've rambled on.I am using this forum to put my thoughts together.
