From what I have been able to gather, a Thompson/Clower researcher has a great web site; however, she was playing a little joke when she put Clifton Clower as the father of Elizabeth Clowers. When you go to his sheet it tells you it is a joke and from the song.
Unfortuntely, some people don't go that far and have entered Clifton Clowers as the father of Elizabeth.
On the same web site it states that Elizabeth Clowers mother is named "Nancy."In the Gideon Thompson bible it states that her mother was named "Mary."I have also found records of the death of Mary Clowers in the Bent Creek Baptist Church where her daughter and son in law worshiped.
Many people have mixed two Jacob Clowers together.Unfortunately, they both had daughters named Elizabeth that were born near the same time. Both Elizabeths ended up in Greene County, TN.
Recently I found a listing from a woman who is an expert on the Clower/Clowers line and she straightened it out.The Jacob Clowers that is the father of Elizabeth Clowers who married Gideon Thompson and then Jackson Smith was the daughter of the Jacob Clowers who came to Greene County with his wife Mary and his will is probated there in the very early 1800's.The other Jacob Clowers stayed in Virginia with wife Johanna or Mary Joanna and his will is probated there. That Jacob Clowers' daughter Elizabeth married only once to David Bowles.
What is interesting is that I have found records of a Clifton Clowers in Tennessee since this whole joke thing happened.I'm sure that will just complicate everything even more.
Shafer is my married name.My husband's Shafer family came from Ohio to California.I don't anything more about them.
Hope this helps.I will always have to laught when I hear Running Bear.
