I am trying to find information on my great grandfather Thomas Joseph Hughes born 1868 in Warwick Rhode Island and died April 9, 1900 in Central Falls. With the right documents I hope to verify his parents names. I have been in contact with the Rhode Island State Archives and they where able to give me a copy of his marriage record. That record states that he was born in Warwick. They also told me that they have no birth record of Thomas J. Hughes. I was also informed that prior to that date (1868) the majority of births were only documented with local churches or in family bibles.
If anyone could please help me with my question list or have any information on this family I would be very thankful.
If I were an Irish family in the 1860’s what churches would I go to in the Warwick area?
Would anyone have access to a family bible for this Hughes family?
Would the town hall of Warwick be holding records that would not be found in the state archives for this time period?
This is what I have on Thomas and his family.
Thomas Joseph Hughes born 1868 Warwick RI. Died April 9, 1900 in Central Falls and he is buried in Mount Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Pawtucket RI.
His wife Clara Messier born Dec.25, 1873 Rutland VT. And died July 4, 1933 Pawtucket RI.
On the death of her husband Clara had remarried to Edward P. Allen and she is buried at Mineral Springs Cemetery in Pawtucket RI.
Thomas J. Hughes’ parents are given as Thomas S. & Catherine Hughes as found in their marriage record. I was always under the impression that Thomas J. was a junior. I have not yet come across any record stating Catherine’s maiden name.
On a speculative note Thomas J. Hughes’ grandparents may have been Barney & Alice Hughes of Warwick Rhode Island.
