John Hunter Allen, born Mecklenburg, county.Father was supposed to be a Colonel William Allen. Mother was Sarah Hunter. Her father was in the battle of Kings Mountain(revolutionary war). John Hgraduated with the freshman class of 1856 from Davidson College and attended a course at Cokesbury Theological Institute 1858-1859.In 1861 he enlisted in the causeof the south.He was in the battle of the wilderness.He was severely wounded at the battle of Malvern Hill.After the war, he went to Miss. and then to Arkansas.Supposedly his family owned land in catawba county North Carolina.John H. taught school in Miss. and for 18 years in Arkansas.He is buried in Poinsett County.He was married 3 times and fathered 14 children.I cannot find his military unit.The family rumor is that he fled North Carolina after killing a black man.I have most of this from an circa1888 newspaper. He came to Arkansas in 1870. I hope this of use.
