Hi Steve - what kind of info do you need? What do you already have? I sometimes find that people have so much info that they really don't need much more, just want to contact living descendants -
I did find in the 1880 US Census (on line free site: LDS/Family Search)
Maxwell D. Adams b. 1827 NC age 53, farmer - parents b. NC
LOCATION: Litter River, Transylvania, NC
wife: Elizabeth b. 1844 SC parents b. SC
a daughter listed is FLORENTINE age 14 b. 1866 NC
always give at least a year or two lee-way on birth years - I find that the census is usually off a bit either way - up or down.
son James C. b. 1871 NC age 9 son Augustus b. 1873 NC daughter nancy R. b. 1880 age 1 month saughter Sarah J. Masingail age 17 g. son James G. masingail age 1 also Mollie M Allen b. 1875 NC age 5 - probably a daughter of Maxwell and Elizabeth Adams.
Apparently Sarah J. Masingail is a daughter that married and had a son James G. and had to move back home for some reason....
In the Latter Day Saints (LDS) IGI Individual Record:
Florentine Jemima Adams b. 22 Jan 1866 of Hazelwood, Haywood Co, NC d. 1 Apr 1959
You could send for her death certificate with Haywood Co, but the entry didn't say WHERE she died - however, I would think it would be Haywood Co -
Florentine Adams married Alfred McDowell Allen on 12 Jul 1891.
You can also send for their marriage certificate - either it may be with the county or with the NC Archives which have a form on-line that you can download and mail in.
apparently from info on the internet: Alfred McDowell Allen was b. 1863 in Transylvania, NC (you can see the different date problem) father: Alfred b. 1828 NC mother: Rebecca Tinsley b. 1829 NC They were married 16 Mar 1856 Transylvania, NC
You can send for marriage record of this couple also - or might find it on-line.
The Tionsleys were of Greenville, Sc and Brevard, NC.
other info on the internet:
Alfred McDowell Allen b. 3 Oct 1862 Brevard, Transylvania, NC d. 12 oct 1937 married 12 Jul 1891Florentine Jemima Adamsk b. 22 Jan 1866 Hazelwood, d. 1 Apr 1959 Hazelwood
father of Alfred: Alfred William Allen (that is a better complete name - always good to have that - too many Allens!)
mother: Rebecca Louisa Tinsley
I believe probably a funeral home in Hazelwood would have taken care of burial arrangements. You can call each one and ask if they did.I have done that with a family member in a town in KY and found exactly which one - they even took pictures of the headstones for me! Hazelwood is not all that big!
Of course obituaries in the newspapers of the day would be another source of information.
You can call the county library and ask what newspaper what in operation during certain years. They may even have microfilms of the newspaper.
the Latter Day Saints (LDS) web site lists children of Florentine and her husband:
Enna b. @ 1892 Canton, Haywood, NC Carl b. @ 1894 Canton, Haywood, NC Nettie b. @ 1896 Canton, Haywood, NC Edna b. @ 1898 Canton, Haywood, NC (may be Adna)
I found two other children that may be theirs: Julia Leola b. 11 Dec 1899 Brevard m. Oscar E. Knight Flora Margaret Allen b. 1 Jun 1902 Canton, Haywood, NC married Samuel Knight (I assume brothers, but might not be)
So the family was in Brevard also in Hazelwood, NC, as well as Canton (a small town with a mill that "smells" up the air - and just one main street - Alfred may have worked in the mill - or may have been farmer in the area)
a special note:
Florentine Adams seen often as GERMAN combined name. This Adams family may have been part of the German community from some other county = like Mecklenburg (Charlotte area) NC. A lot of Germans came down the Big Wagon Road from PA to NC and settled in the mid-section of NC and then moved around.
I know there are Scotch-Irish in Murphy Area of NC that came down from PA to NC and settled in the mountains near Andrews, NC (Murphy area).
