ST. ALBANS BAY, VT. April 21, 2005 - Miss Dorothy S. Allen, 93, a longtime resident of St. Albans Bay, passed away in the Franklin County Rehabilitation Center in St. Albans Town after a short illness.
Dorothy was born in Absecon, N.J. on Aug. 30, 1911. She was a daughter of the late Charles Clifford, Sr. and Serena (Hilliard) Allen. Dorothy graduated from Absecon School. She also graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1929, from the New Jersey Women's College of Rutgers University in 1933 and from Columbia University Teachers College with a Master of Arts Degree, Class of 1935. Dorothy retired after 20 years of service with the Alexis I. DuPont School District. She was head of the Social Studies Department at the time of her retirement. She also taught school in Puerto Rico, North Carolina and New Jersey. She was a longtime board member of the Autonoe Club in St. Albans and she was very involved in Health Care for the Aging and in the American Association of University Women. Dorothy was an 80-year member of the Absecon United Methodist Church in New Jersey.
Dorothy is survived by two nephews, Charles Clifford Allen III and his wife Cynthia of Massachusetts and Walter Clark Allen and his wife Sheryl of New Jersey. As well as two special great-nieces, Kate Schultz and Susan Allen; one great-nephew, Cody Allen; and great-great-nephew, Samuel Allen Schultz. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Charles Clifford Allen, Jr.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave. Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service on Thursday, April 7, 2005. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the Allen Family in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.
