My gt grandfather was WILLIAM HENRY ALLEN; he was born in Birmingham, England in 1846/7. Like his father, also William, he was an "ironmaster" and ran the Washington Foundry in Commercial Street, Birmingham. In the foundry he made architectural ironware including prefabricated bridges which he exported to the US. One such bridge over the Ohio River collapsed and he was sued in the High Court in London. I guess this ruined him financially and in 1881 he ran away to the US, leaving his wife and three children behind. I guess he had contacts there from his earlier business dealings. He was never seen in England again.
In 1912 Mr Allen's nephew set out for the US on the Titanic; he never made it but local newspaper reports stated that he was on his way to the US to live with his uncle (just has to be WHA!) at 593 Eleventh Avenue, New York. I'm thinking he must have lived in NYC all the time.
I would like to find out what happened to William Henry Allen, about his business and whether he established a new family in his new country. I would appreciate any information anyone can offer. Thanks in anticipation!
