I've been interested in the Abraham Allen, Sr. family for many years.I descend from Abraham's older brother George Allen, who died in Orange Co. NC in 1806.In addition, three of Abraham's children married into the Tinnin family, distant kinfolk of mine.
Abraham ALLEN, Sr. was born about 1740, perhaps in PA, almost certainly son of Samuel ALLEN, who was on the 1755 Tax List of Orange Co. NC. Abraham was probably born before his folks went to Orange Co., and (I believe) died bet. 1820-1830 in Alabama or Arkansas. In 1780 Abraham received a 100 ac. land grant on both sides of New Hope Creek in Orange Co., and by the time of the 1790 Tax, he had 1 White Poll, 2 Black Polls, and 274 acres. He and and wife Elizabeth sold out in 1794 and went to Montgomery Co. TN.All his sons were gone from Orange Co. by the time of the 1800 Census. He was listed on the 1798 Montgomery Co. TN Tax List, and on the 1800 Montgomery Co. Tax List, which included sons Samuel and Andrew, and son-in-law Samuel "GATES" (FADDIS in 1798; GATTIS).
His wife was Elizabeth KENDRICK, per a report by a Mrs. Galbreath in 1890, with her information relayed to me by Abraham's descendant Claire Davenport.Mrs. Galbreath had access to a family Bible and reported:
Major Abe Allen married Bettie Kendrick.Eight Children:Andie, Abraham, Sandy, George, Margaret, Bettit, Lorie, Nannie.
George married Bettie Blackwood (Tn, to Ky 1800[?])
Bettie married Lonie [Lawrence] Tinnon
Nannie m. Thomas Tinnon. The Tinnon went to Ark.
Additional data on the children, all of whom were born in Orange Co. NC:
1Samuel, the oldest, married Elizabeth BARBEE, Orange Co. marriage bond 3 Sep 1791; Christo BARBEE bondsman
Her family was rather well to do and lived in what became Durham Co. NC.
Christopher BARBEE Orange Co. 1823 will (pr. 1824 WB E-229) mentions dau. Elizabeth (m. Samuel ALLEN) and her ch Polly & Christopher ALLEN; they living in TN.
Samuel was age 50-60 in the 1830 Census of Independence Co. AR (b. 1770-1780) and died bet. 1839-1850 in Texas.I know of three children:Abraham (m. cousin Sebella ALLEN), Christopher and Polly.Son Christopher ALLEN returned to Orange Co. to marry Nancy MOORE in 1823 (1841 Orange Co. will of Nancy MOORE widow of John).According to Goodpeed's bio on grandson Andrew ALLEN (son of Abraham), Samuel was one of the earliest settlers of Independence Co. and lived there several years before he went to Texas. He must have gone with a son or son-in-law, who has not been identified.
2George (b. bef. 1775,d. 1847 TN) m.1785 Elizabeth BLACKWOOD
She daughter of William BLACKWOOD, Orange Co. WB E-229.I only know of two children:Abram and William ALLEN.He was in the 1840 Census of Montgomery Co. TN, listed as age 70-80 (b. 1760-70) but that had to have been a census error (or a different George ALLEN).
3Andrew m. Sarah TINNIN (from Montgomery Co. to Independence Co. AR)
Sarah was born about 1782 in Sumner Co. TN, dau of Col. Hugh TINNIN of the Revolution and Sibella THOMPSON.I know of three children:1) Sebella b. abt 1802 Montgomery Co. TN, d. bet. 1842-1850 Independence Co. AR; 2) Hugh b. abt 1804 in TN d. abt 1845 in Washington Co. AR; and 3) Elizabeth ALLEN, b. 10 Feb 1806, d. 11 Jan 1836 in Batesville, AR.
4Margaret m.(1795) Samuel GATTIS
Orange Co. marriage bond 25 Jan 1795, Abr. ALLEN bondsman.Per my records:The family went to Franklin Co. AR (and were there for the 1830 Census) and then to Tallahatchie Co. MS (1840 Census) where he died.Margaret died in Yalobusha Co. MS after the 1850 Census.I show them with three children, born in Montgomery Co. TN:Elizabeth, Allen, and Samuel.
5Nancy m.(7 Nov 1799 Montgomery Co. TN) Thomas TINNEN, died in Lawrence Co. AR.Thomas was a brother of Lawrence TINNIN, who married Nancy's sister Elizabeth and of Sarah TINNIN, who married her brother Andrew ALLEN.
6Elizabeth m.(1802 Montgomery Co. TN) Lawrence TINNIN, son of Col Hugh TINNIN of the Revolution.
They went to Cape Girardeau Co. MO and finally to AR, where he died. One child, Isabella "Sibby" b. in Cape Girardeau Co. MO and married Jesse YOUNT there.Other children: Mary, Abraham, John, Samuel and the youngest, William Lawrence Tinnin, who was born 1 Aug 1817 in Batesville, Independence Co. AR.The older children were born in TN.
7Abraham Jr. b. 1784, d. 1847 in Tallahatchie Co. MS
I have no spouse data on him. He was in the 1840 Census of Tallahatchie Co., listed as age 50-60, with a wife 40-50, 3 males 20-30 and one boy 5-10.He was apparently in the 1830 Census of Independence Co. AR, same page as his brother Andrew, listed as Abraham ALLEN, Sr. age 30-40, with a boy under 5 and another 5-10; 4 girls under 5, and a wife 20-30.
8Lorie (or Lawrence?) -- no records found.I'm not sure if Lorie was male or female.
