Haywood, I can't answer all you really want to know, but I can put to rest the report that the mother of the Abraham Allen, Jr. of the Thornton Cemetery was Elizabeth DORMAN. There is a record in the LDS Church's IGI showing:
Abraham ALLEN Spouse:Abigail DORMAN Marriage 16 Dec 1772 New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut
That's from IGI Batch # 7106403, which has 11 Allen family records, all associated with New Haven County, Connecticut, and I don't question any of them.I'm afraid that someone came across this IGI record, decided Abraham must have moved from Connecticut to North Carolina, and gave Abigail DORMAN a middle name of Elizabeth, so it could fit the records for Abraham and Elizabeth ALLEN of Orange Co. NC.
But Abraham of that IGI record must have been the Abraham Allen of the 1800 Census, New Haven Co. CT, listed as Abra. Allen, males: under 10, 16-26, and over 45; females 10-16 and 26-45 That shows him born bef. 1755, wife b. 1755-1775, and oldest child still home born 1784-1774.ADaniel Dorman and widow Mary Dorman were listed a few households away on the same census page.
Abraham's 1810 census was similar, with two sons and a daughter still at home, but his wife had turned 45, indicating that she was born 1755-1765.That's quite consistent with the 1772 marriage of Abraham Allen and Abigail Dorman.
But Abraham Allen of Orange Co. NC and Montgomery Co. TN, with wife Elizabeth and children Samuel (m. Elizabeth Barbee), George (m. Elizabeth Blackwood), Andrew (m. Sarah Tinnin), Margaret (m. Samuel Gattis), Nancy (m. Lawrence Tinnin), and Abraham Jr. (wife Elizabeth perhaps Kendrick) was living in Montgomery Co. TN in 1800, as shown by Tax records of that county for 1798 and 1800.
I've seen WorldConnect data that show Abraham's wife as Abigail Elizabeth Dorman, and also show a Dorman H Gattis, born 1796 in Orange Co. NC, as the son of Samuel Gattis and Margaret Allen. That too has no basis in fact. There was a Dorman H Gattis in an 1853 Land record in Florida. The 1850 Census of St. Lucie Co. Florida (Division 18) shows D.H. Gattis as age 32 (born about 1818) born in Albania, not age about 54 born in North Carolina.
