The above report on Abraham ALLEN Jr's siblings has some errors that should be corrected. Also, Haywood Thornton's findings in the Old Pine Hill Bailey-Thornton Cemetery of Tallahatchie Co. MS make it desireable to mention other ties between the ALLEN and KENDRICK families.Below are the corrections and further comments.
1.Son George ALLEN married Elizabeth BLACKWOOD in 1794 or Jan 1795, not 1785.Their Orange Co. marriage bond shows: George Allen & Elizabeth Blackwood, 27 Dec 1794; Bondsman: Wm Craige, Jr, Witness J McKerall
I could have mentioned that although I feel confortable identifying only sons Abram and William, George's 1820 Census record in Mongtomery Co. TN shows him with 7 boys and 3 girls. His 1830 Census record had 2 males and 4 females beside his wife, and probably included a married son and his wife.A George P ALLEN of the 1840-1850 Censuses of Montgomery Co. was very possibly a son.
2.Daughter Margaret and husband Samuel GATTIS were in the 1830 Census of Franklin Co. AL, not AR.(There is no Franklin Co. AR.)Their record shows: males 10-15, 20-30, 60-70 (b. 1760-70) fems: 10-15, 20-30, 40-50 (b. 1780-90) Samuel was probably indicated too old and wife Margaret too young by one age bracket. He reportedly died in Tillatoba, Yalobusha Co. MS.The widow Margaret was household head in the 1840 Census of Yalobusha Co. MS, indicated born 1770-1780, with a daughter [Elizabeth] age 20-30, but 40 per the 1850 Census. On the same 1840 Census page was Margaret's son Allen GATTIS, age 30-40, with wife Angelina KENDRICK, age 20-30, and a boy and a girl under age 5.Descendant Claire Davenport reported that Samuel GATTIS had gone to Lauderdale Co. AL along with his father-in-law Abraham ALLEN in 1820.Franklin Co. was just south of Lauderdale Co. at that time, before Colbert Co. was formed, separating the two counties.
I could have mentioned that Samuel GATTIS, Jr. married Paulina KENDRICK, presumably Angelina's sister.Haywood Thornton has shown that Paulina was the daughter of Olsimus KENDRICK and wife Elizabeth BARTON, and they are buried in a Thornton family cemetery in Tallahatchie Co. MS (Post # 23914 in this forum). The exact kinship between Olsimus and Margaret (ALLEN) GATTIS' mother Elizabeth KENDRICK is unknown, but Elizabeth was about the same age as Olsimus' father, Jones KENDRICK, b. abt 1750 in NC per his record in DAR Patriot Index.
Margaret was indicated born 1780 in the 1850 Census of Yalobusha Co. MS, but since she was married in 1795, she was probably born a few years before 1780.Her 1850 Census record shows her with unwed daughter Elizabeth 50, who was incorrectly indicated as born in NC.The family was in Montgomery Co. TN in 1800.
3.Son Abraham ALLEN, Jr was not the one in the 1830 Census of Independence Co. AR.It seems clear that Abraham Jr. left home while his folks were still in Montgomery Co. TN and joined some of his mother's KENDRICK kin in Maury Co. TN.Maury Co. marriage records show that he married Elizabeth KENDRICK on 14 May 1814.Jones KENDRICK, who had been on the 1779 Tax List of Orange Co. NC and the 1800 Tax List of Montgomery Co. TN, along with Abraham ALLEN Sr., died in Maury Co. 1816/17.Abraham ALLEN [Jr] was household head in Maury Co. in the 1820 Census, which shows another family living with him.He and Elizabeth may have had one daughter born 1815-1820.They had two slaves. In the 1840 Census, he was in Tallahatchie Co. MS, where he is shown age 50-60 with one male 5-10, 3 males age 20-30, and no females except wife Elizabeth (40-50).He was listed with 21 slaves.Abraham Jr. and Elizabeth were the only ALLEN names in the Thornton Cemetery in Tallahatchie Co. referenced above.None of their children have been identified.
