I have been finding a lot of SCRUGGS/ALLEN family trees on the internet, and too many of them are posting HANNAH ALLEN's maiden name as WATSON.It was most certainly NOT! This "WATSON" thing is like a virus.People keep picking it up from each other.I hear a lot of people saying, "But I read it in a book!"Well, did you read any proof? If you did, please enlighten me!I have been mixed up in the past because someone gave me information that was false.I try not to do that to others!
Let me explain to you about the misinformation I had to deal with in order to discover I am an ALLEN: The first misleading info was from the book by Ethel Hastings Scruggs Dunklin. Her book is entitled Scruggs Genealogy: With a brief history of the allied families Briscoe, Dial, Dunklin, Leake, and Price. The publisher: Laplante & Dunklin Printing Co. (January 1, 1912.) In the book she lists THOMAS SCRUGGS as the father of WILLIAM, who was the father of my ggggf, FINCH SCRUGGS (who m Nancy Thomas). I believed that for years, for after all, IT WAS IN A BOOK!
I finally found an original copy of THE SCRUGGS GENEALOGY, which belonged to Margaret Scruggs Carruth, Mrs. Dunklin's niece.(They had traveled together gathering info for the book when Margaret was a teenager. Margaret later became a professional genealogist and wrote an addendum to the infamous book.) In the book, THOMAS was scratched out.Over his name was written "JAMES"!So that led me, after many wasted years, to discover that JAMES married HANNAH ALLEN, the daughter of WILLIAM ALLEN and HANNAH.
I used to see Hannah's last name as a blank, as a question mark, or as "UNKNOWN".More and more now, I am seeing it written as "WATSON"! This is very hard to understand, because JEAN posted OVER SIX YEARS AGO on THIS forum that WILLIAM ALLEN could not have been married to BENJAMIN WATSON's sister!
For those of you who do not know this fact: BENJAMIN WATSON wrote in his will in 1715 that he was leaving clothes to his brother-in-law, WILLIAM ALLEN.(This is where the virus began!)Benjamin had only one sister. Her name was Sarah, and she was married to Michael Johnson. The fact is:BENJAMIN WATSON'S WIFE, AGGY, was WILLIAM ALLEN's SISTER!Now how can anyone deduct from these facts that WILLIAM ALLEN'S wife was Hannah "WATSON"?
Tomorrow I will tell you who I believe HANNAH really was. If anyone wants to discuss this subject with me, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org Talk to you later!June Scruggs Hendon
