Dear Claire:I too have Allen family ancestors from both Salem, MA and Maine (probably separate families) and it is very difficult sorting through all these Allens!I also have been searching for the Joseph Allen that was Zebulon¡¦s father. Recently I found an article in the Essex Antiquarian (1899, page 37) that has the following information (summarized). The same info is in The History of Salem Massachusetts (by Perley) Volume III, p.96, which I found on the web:
JOSEPH ALLEN(1), seaman, resided in Salem. He married Bethia ---- and died before June 29, 1682.His children were:
JOSEPH ALLEN (2) baptized Jan. 6, 1677-8.He lived in Salem and was a joiner. He married Abigail Hill of Salem. His will is dated Jan. 7, 1739.He had 10 children but at least 2 died young. One was ZEBULON, baptized September 15, 1706.
ZEBULON ALLEN: baptized Jan. 6, 1677-8 in Salem. He married widow Sarah Ellinwood of Beverly (published May 30, 1730).Child born in Beverly: JOANNA, b. Jan. 12, 1731-32.
(Note:Joanna Allen married Titus Standley/Stanley)
So, did Joseph marry Abigail Hutchinson or Abigail Hill?Several sources say Hutchinson, but Hill seems to make more sense because Abigail Hill¡¦s father¡¦s name was Zebulon Hill.Torrey¡¦s New England Marriages Prior to 1700 says Joseph married Abigail Hutchinson/Hill/Lake??I plan to do some more research.
I have a question that you may know the answer to ¡VZebulon married the widow Sarah Ellinwood. Was Ellinwood her maiden name? Hope this helps!
