I went to the local genealogy library today and found this information in the Maine Genealogist, #17, 1995, p 62-63 (summarized):
Ralph ELLINGWOOD (1694) married Sarah WOODBURY 1711/12 in Beverly.Sarah was the daughter of William and Joanna (WHEELER) WOODBURY.Ralph died in 1728, apparently at sea, leaving 5 children and a conciderable estate. The widow Sarah was administratrix of his estate and in 1733 was called Sarah ELLINGWOOD, alias ALLEN.The article says she married Zebulon ALLEN (intention) 31 May 1730 in Beverly. He was baptized 15 Sept 1706, son of Joseph and Abigail (HILL) ALLEN.
I tend to believe what this article says, even though it was written about the Ellingwood family. It seems well researched and written.I find about 5 different Joseph ALLENs married to Abigail HILLs on Rootsweb, only these 2 with children:
1.Joseph 1650, Abigail 1651, Zebulon 1690 (same as Sarah) married in Dartmouth 1682
2.Joseph 1678, Abigail 1670, Zebulon 1706 (Joseph's parents Joseph and Bethia) source History of Salem.(I had that book this morning and was looking for something else. Will look at it again next time.)
Since the article I found says Zebulon was baptized in 1706, it seems like he was 16 years younger than Sarah. But if she, as the article says, was left a conciderable estate and 5 young children, I coud see where they might get together--for the estate and a father for those children.
Ancestors are funny people. They sure didn't want us knowing their business!
