ALLEN, James W. Wife: Mary J. MAYO Marriage Date: 15 Jun 1865 Recorded in: Bastrop, Texas Source: FHL Number 965226
I could also where he was granted 160 acres of property in Bastrop County 27 Jan 1863.
There is also a really good clue on the 1880 census of Refugio County.James W is listed as age 35, born AL with parents born SC, but there is a lady marked as sister, Frances, age 25 that is born in TX with parents born AL.Although the parents birthplaces are not the same, if Frances is really his sister and was born in Texas then he probably came to TX as a child with his family and has been there at least 25 years. On this census Mary J is 33 born AL and children are Samuel W 13, John Edward 11, James A 6, Francis E 4, Julia 2, and Wade 5/12 (Dec).
If you read the land grant paperwork it will probably tell you when he came to Texas. At least, there have been dates on the ones I have seen.
Don't feel bad about a "recent" relative that you can't find.I knew my grandfather as a child, and it took me 30 years to find his family.I had thousands of people in my family database but not that line. When the LDS 1880 census was released, I found him in 30 seconds, two counties away from where I expected him to be.I had been looking at his family in 1870, but had no way to prove that it was really them.Neither my mother, nor her two living siblings had ever heard the name of their grandparents. We all have to start somewhere.
