Notes for James Allen:
James appears on the New Kent personal property tax rolls in 1782 owning: 17 slaves, 5 horses and 22 cattle. He paid taxes for 1 white male over 21. 1783 he ownes: 16 slaves, 5 horses and 21 cattle with 1 male over 21.1784 he ownes: 15 slaves, 4 horses and 20 cattle with 1 white male over 21. 1785 he ownes 13 slaves, 5 horses and 17 cattle with 1 white male over 21.1786 he ownes 6 slaves, 3 horses and 19 cattle with 1 white male over 21.1787 he ownes 12 slaves, 3 horses and 26 cattle with 1 white male 16 to 21 years plus himself. The 16 to 21 year old is probably his son William born 1766-1771.1788 he ownes 8 slaves and 3 horses.1789 he ownes 7 slaves, 3 horses and his son William Allen Jr. is with him over 21.This makes William born about 1768.In 1790 James has 8 slaves, 3 horses and his son James Allen Jr is listed as over 16 with him. This makes James born about 1774.His son William is listed by himself. In 1791 James has both his sons listed with him as over 21, he ownes 9 slaves and 3 horses. The rolls continue until 1794 when James died.No wife is listed.
James is listed as owning 525 acres on the New Kent land tax rolls.Part of this ended up with his son William Allen. This land is called Lower Parrish today (1987).There is a large cemetery on this land.Only one marker is there today. It is for James Parish 2nd husband of Mary Reid(Allen)widow of Daniel Slater.
Children of James Allen are:
+ 2 i. William2 Allen, born 1768 in New Kent, VA; died Bet. 1802 - 1803 in near Holly Fork, New Kent, VA, USA.
3 ii. Planter James Allen, born 1774 in New Kent, VA; died Bet. 1812 - 1813 in New Kent, VA.He married Homemaker Susannah in VA; born Bef. 1775 in VA; died 1838 in Shell Point, New Kent, VA.
Notes for Planter James Allen:
James married the widow of John Richardson who died in 1802.Susannah Richardson Allen is listed on the 1813 personal property tax rolls. She has some of her Richardson sons on this roll.
Susannah had her last Richardson child in 1802.She didn't died until 1838.
Notes for Homemaker Susannah:
Susannah was evidently with child when John C. Richardson died. Her son George W. Richardson is listed as being born in 1802 by his family. His death certificate says that he was 62 years old, died 19 March 1856 in New Kent. This would make him born in 1794.
Susanna also married 2nd to James Allen Jr.He was the son of James Allen Sr.He had a brother named William. The Allen land is today called Lower Parrish and owned by the Dean family.James Allen Jr. died by 1815 when he is dropped from the tax rolls.
Susannah may be a WalkerShe received 200 ares of dower land from her husband John's estate. When they filmed the tax records one page is slipped upward.Count the number of lines up to see that she isn't getting land from Nimrod Poindexter estate. Also look at the following year for the amount of tax. Then go back a year and look for the same amount of tax for Susan Allen.I believe that she might be a Walker because her oldest son carries Walker for his middle name.
Susannah is said to have smoked a pipe and sat on the porch in the evenings enjoying her pipe and view.
It was said that Susannah was lively and fond of dancing. They were having a party at Shell Point when the house caught fire and the Richardson Coat of Arms was burned.I don't know how much of the home was burned.Part or all of the house may have been burned. At a later date Robert Farinholtbuilt a home called "Newkirk's" on Shell Point.
1820 New Kent CO.,VA Census:
Susanna Allen born Before 1775

Female born 1804-1810 (Possibly a daughter by James Allen)
She has 3 slaves.
Another possibly on the 1820 census is: John G. Mitchell has a female that maybe his wife Harriet. It could be that John & Susanna had more daughters and they died before distribution of the Richardson land.
The 1830 New Kent County, Virginia census shows John G. Mitchell with his wife and family. Also in his house is a woman born 1760 to 70.This may be Susannah living with her daughter who married John Mitchell.
200 acres of dower land went to Susannah Allen in 1824. In 1829 73 12 acres went to John G. Mitchell by deed from George W. Richardson and distributors. Susannah still had 127 acres.
1837 she has 99 acres.20 acres of her land was sold to John G. Mitchell by John W. Richardson and Catherine Richardson.
John G Mitchell is holding 28 acres in 1837.
In 1838 Susannah Allen estate has 99 acres.

Notes for Planter Daniel Slater:
War of 1812 Pension records give the dates of marriage and death. He served as a Cpt during the war.
He got 275 acres fromhis mother in law Ann Allen in 1816. She had died in 1815.This was part of the old James Allen land. This land is situated near Holly Fork across the the road from Locust Grove the old home of Dr James Richardson.
In Virginia Biography there is a story about Lucullus Slater a grandson of Daniel. The story also says that Daniel Slater grew tobacco worked by slave labor. He is remembered as a man of nervous temperment , quick in speech and action, but just and generous.
When I visited this land in 1987 there were some old blubs blooming near where the old house had once stood. There was one marker to James Parish still in the large old Allen/Slater cemetery. Many mounds of dirt could be seen where other graves must be located.
Daniel first appears on the personal property tax records in 1800.
On the 1812 record he has two slaves and two horses.
On the 1815 record he has two slaves and two horses with thirteen cattle.
The 1810 census shows Daniel and his wife Mary with one daughter born 1800-1810.
