I loved this article but it printed out to 4 and 1/2 pages.I think the newspaper people will throw me out on my ear if I go in and ask them to print that many pages.LOLI had to do a lot of talking to the staffin the newspaper office in Richmond, IN, for them to even consent to keep what I took in for the editors to look at and see what they could do with it.It may or may not get printed.
Had a call from one of my cousins today. She said her mother is so excited about the reunion and is so pleased that it's going to be in KY.They would have loved to come last year but her mother isn't able to travel that long a distance.I think we might have a good turnout. Here are a list of the 4th generations from John G. and James Allen. This should put it into the range of living individuals parents or grandparents. For those who do know know if they descend from John & Esther Jane.. they should know their grandparents names. Then we can educate them on the rest of their family tree. LOL. What do you think about putting this in the paper?
Rockcastle Co. Allen Family Are you ready for a Reunion?
It all started back in 1802 in Tazewell Co. Virginia when John Allen b. ca. 1770 and his first wife Eleanor began purchasing land and establishing themselves in the newly formed county. We only know of one son from this couple.Robert Allen who married Elizabeth " Betsy" Keskey/Caskey.Robert died in Tazewell in 1833 and his children remained there.
In 1826 John b. ca. 1770, married Esther Jane Neil/Neal in Tazewell. Their first 3 children, viz: Elizabeth Allen b. 1828 m. Benjamin Treadway, John G. Allen b. 1830 m. Margaret "Peggy Campbell, and Thomas Allen b. 1832, were born in Tazewell.
After his son Robert died in 1833, John and Esther and these 3 children sold out the over 1200 acres of land he owned and moved to Scott Co. VA in 1834.Here their next 3 children were born, viz:Samuel Nathaniel Allen b. 1836 m. Elizabeth Greear, Cosby A. Allen b. 1839 never married, and James Allen b. 1841 married Rebecca Lane .
Esther was pregnant with James when her husband John Allen died in Scott County in Jan of 1841.abt. 3 yrs after John Allen's death Esther had a daughter Nancy Jane Allen. Nancy Jane married James Collins. Her son has her father as Geo. Allen from Ireland on her death certificate, but this is doubtful.I think he confused information he had heard growing up as Esther Jane Neil's father Colvin/Calvin Neil came to Virginia from Ireland with his father Patrick. And I don't know if there ever was a George Allen and perhaps her children were all told John was her father.
We do not know what happened to John & Esther's son Thomas as last record we find for him is the 1850 census where he was living in the home with his mother. Their son's John G., Samuel Nathaniel, and James, as well as their son in law Benjamin Treadway all fought for the Confederacy during the war between the states.
Of the children of John and Esther Jane Neil Allen,Elizabeth and her husband Benjamin Treadway settled in Wise County. They did have some descendants that came to Rockcastle then on to Indiana. Samuel Nathaniel Allen stayed in Scott County.Descendants of his still live on part of the land that was his, and where the Allen Graveyard is located.Nancy Jane and her husband James Collins settled in Wise County.James Allen went to Wise Co. but is buried in the Flat Rock cemetery in Rockcastle Co, as his son Samuel Neal Allen moved to Rockcastle and worked as a foreman for the L & N railroad making the tunnel at Mullins Station. This job took his life just a few months after his father James died. He and his father share a headstone. After the death of James, his wifeRebecca went back to Wise County to live with her daughter.John G. and Peggy came to Rockcastle Co. and settled on Crooked Creek. Many of his descendants are still living in the area.Butler Co. Ohio, and Hendricks Co. Indiana as well as Richmond Indiana were favorite migrating spots for this family.Like most back then they went North for the good jobs.
OnSaturday May 24th, at the Christian Appalachian Project at Renfro Valley, we will be holding our 2nd official " Allen Family Reunion."Last Summer we held it in Scott County and was blessed to meet many cousins who still live in the area. This year we thought it would be fitting to hold it where the other half of our family set their roots. A potluck meal will be served around noon, so bring a dish, come early, plan to stay late and visit with family members that you haven't seen in awhile and some that you may never have met.
The following is a list of the known couples of this family, that would be 4 generations from John G. & Peggy as well as James and Rebecca. This should bring the family to a close enough range that should you be a descendant, they will either be your parents or grandparents. If you are interested in attending, and want more information regarding hotel info ect.. Please contact Delores Allen-Carpenter at859-986-8568 or 606-256-9053.If you still wonder if you may be a part of this family you can email Sheila Allen-Winterberg at firstname.lastname@example.org. We hope to see you there!
