A John E. Allen born about 1830 in Alabama is in the 1850 census of Anderson County, Texas.Anderson County is adjacent to Houston County. The census reads as follows (my notes in parentheses):
John Allen, 46, born GA Margaret Allen, 47, born TN (she was actually only about 38 and her maiden name was either Thomas or McKnight. She was the widow of Stephen H. Hatton when she married John Allen.) Newton Hatton, 18, born TN James M. Hatton, 15, born TN (married Hannah Cruce) William F. Hatton, 13, born MS (married Temperance Barton) Jefferson L. Hatton, 10, born Houston Co., TX Eliza J. Hatton, 7, born Houston Co., TX Francis M. Allen, 1, born Anderson Co., TX John E. Allen, 20, born Alabama Ethon (Ethan?) Allen, 15, born Alabama Humphrey W. Allen, 15, born Alabama
In 1860 John Allen Sr. and wife Margaret were in Houston County. The other children are not present except Francis, now age 11, and a daughter, Margaret, age 9.With them is Susan Allen, 81, born South Carolina -- apparently John's mother. The Houston County US GenWeb site has transcribed Susan Allen's will, which she made in 1864, and which was filed in March of 1865.
Hope this helps you.I am not related to this family so far as I know except that Hannah Cruce Hatton was my great-grandmother's sister.
