Francis Brown "I" died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692 and left a will.He was married to an Elizabeth, and some say that she was Elizabeth Cole.I don't thinkthat anyone has any proof of her last name, but there is one record that I saw that makes this seem to be at least a possibility.
Francis Brown "I" had sons named Francis Brown "II" and Daniel Brown "I" (Daniel "I" married Jane Copeland, and they had a son who was named Abraham Brown who married Mary Tribble....Mary Tribble had a nephew who was named Shadrack Tribble, and Shadrack Tribble's wife was a member of the same Coleman family and the Coleman family into which Daniel Brown "II" married.....Daniel Brown "II" was a son of Francis Brown "II").
Francis Brown "II" died in Essex in 1708/1709 and left a will, and an unknown (but probably related) Thomas Brown was the witness on that will.Francis Brown "II" was also married to an Elizabeth, and some believe that she was Elizabeth Allen. One researcher stated that Valentine Allen had a daughter who was named Elizabeth, and one of Valentine's "Allen relatives" also had a daughter named Elizabeth Allen (I would have to do a search to remind myself of the name of this relative of Valentine Brown who also had a daughter who was named Elizabeth). Some believe that Valentine's daughter Elizabeth married William Brown and that the OTHER Elizabeth Allen married Francis Brown "II."I simply do not know.
Now, records in Essex Co., VA clearly show that a William Brown was married to a Mary (versus an Elizabeth), and a daughter of this William and Mary Brown, who was also named Mary, married James Landrum. So, was this a DIFFERENT William Brown, or did the "one and only" early William Brown really not marry an Elizabeth after all....and in any case, were either of these William Browns (if there were two of them) REALLY related to the family of Francis Brown "I?"
The will of Francis Brown "I" mentioned no son named William, but Francis Brown "I" certainly COULD have had a BROTHER who was named William (but no proof).Per the book titled "A place in Time," (written by a college professor) there was an earlier Francis Brown in Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA who owned land there with a man who was named Oliver Segar. This earlier Francis Brown (we call him Francis Brown "0") died in Lancaster/Middlesex in the 1650s, per the referenced book, and we wonder if he could have been the father of Francis Brown "I" (and/or the father of the William Brown (or two) who married Elizabeth and/or Mary).
We have found some recent clues that MIGHT show a connection to some of the Browns who were in Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA (PECO....and later in Lunenburg/Bedford Co., VA....to the above Browns in Essex Co., VA.There was a William and Elizabeth (Unknown) Brown who purchased land in Amelia Co., VA in 1741, and in 1754, a William Brown was the witness on the will of a John Davison in Amelia/PECo (no proof that this was the same William Brown who had bought land in Amelia in 1741...but that would seem likely). This John Davison had come to the Amelia/PECo area of VA from Orange/Culpeper Co., VA in 1742 (so had this William Brown also been in Orange/Culpeper Co., VA before he came to Amelia)?Per an excellent researcher, this John Davison was apparently born in the Essex Co., VA area in the early-1690s.Could this William Brown in Amelia/PECo have also been out of Essex Co., VA (and could his wife have been Elizabeth Allen....or has that couple been traced to some other area)?
Note: Daniel Brown "II" (a son of Francis Brown "II") married Elizabeth Coleman, and they left Essex and moved to the Orange/Culpeper Co., VA area, where Daniel Brown "II" died around 1747.IF the William Brown who supposedly married Elizabeth Allen was a relative of Daniel Brown "II," then maybe they left Essex Co., VA and moved to Orange Co., VA TOGETHER in the 1730s.
In 1754, a Daniel, Abraham and William Brown all appeared on the first-ever tax list for PECo (PECo had been created from a part of Amelia). In 1758, a Daniel Brown and a Shadrack Brown were the witnesses on a deed in PECo for a William Davison (who was a known son of the above John Davison who had died in 1754).In 1761, this Shadrack Brown married a Mary "Mollie" Nance in Lunenburg Co., VA, and various men named Valentine Brown also appeared in that county. The Nance family had a male in it who was named Paschal Nance, and there were some later men in the Brown family who were named Paschal Brown (in the Bedford and Franklin Co., VA area).
Note: There was a family in Amelia Co., VA whose SURNAME was "Paschal," but I do not know if they intermarried with the Nance and/or Brown families.
I wonder what the odds are that one or more of the above men named Valentine Brown in the Lunenburg Co., VA area had that name because of Valentine Allen?Per various records, a man named Valentine Brown was an adult in Lunenburg Co., VA by at least 1748, and there were other/later men in that area who were also named Valentine Brown.Comments on any of the above?
