Paul, My grandmother's Allen line came from Gilmer Co GA and settled in White County as well, then my uncle Donald Sosebee married Ruth Allen whose mother AND father were both Allens, different lines, so that makes 3 different lines all in White and Habersham Counties. There was also descendants of Benjamin Allen that settled in White and Habersham as well.
On top of that my ex's grandmother was an Allen and I believe she is from this line of Allens that you are in.They are all over the place over here in Banks & Jackson Co GA.
Have you ever read about the area in NC that is now referred to as "Old Walton Co GA"?If not read about it here http://www.shahall.com/walton.htmlhttp://www.shahall.com/walton.htmlThere are 6 Allen men that helped to form that area. After the surveyor came and they found out that the land was in NC instead of GA, all the Allens split.William and Reuben went to SC and later to GA and the 2 James Allens went straight to GA.I don't know what happened to Samuel or Lewis.
Anyway, there was a large contingent of Allens that were in Franklin Co GA and according to some folks it was the migration route for many who came to America through the ports in Savannah or Charleston- first they were in Burke Co GA then to Franklin. Some of the folks that came down here from VA and NC after the Revolution came for the land grants and such, and I am sure that they headed for friendly folks and looked for kin, just like we all tend to do.That's just my theory though.
So - in my past searches for "my" William Allen, I have ran into William Hunt Allen who I believe is from the Valentine Allen line, then there is William Allen that was married to Abigail Barnes whose descendants were in that NC/GA/SC area, then there was the William Allen who was in your wife's line who was married 3 times, and had about 22 kids.2 of these kids WERE Reuben and William and THESE are the children who I'd like to identify once and for all.
Some people say that this family comes from Robert Allen and Elizabeth Young (hence all the boys named "Young" Allen) while others say they are related to the Carroll Co VA Allens that shot up the courthouse in Hillsville.I've seen both lines so messed up it's not even funny.
So - I got a male cousin in my Allen line to help out by joining the Allen DNA project, and found out that my line of Allens ARE related to the Carroll Co VA Allens. The next step is to find a bonafide-certified descendant of this line of one of William's kids who was married 3 times and see for once and for all if these doggone Allens are in the same family or not.
I did find a fellow in Pike Co GA that is a descendant of Drury (Drewry) Allen there but he won't committ to the project. My next question is does your wife have any cousins who are Allens that would like to join the project? Maybe we can collaborate. Hey, I think I sent you a link to the Allen website as well. Cheryl
