More info on Edward Jay Allen, born 1830 in New York; family came to Pittsburgh while Edward was very young.He married Elizabeth Wilson Robinson in 1857. He died in Pittsburgh December 26, 1915; wife Elizabeth died 5 days later. Children were Edith (died in infancy), William Hervey (married Helen Myers, 5 children; then Ethel Fisher, no children), Edna Jay (married Andre Rickmers, no children), Mary Lucy (also known as May; unmarried), Edward Halkett (married Katherine Fitch, 1 child), and Harold (married Mabel Stiner?, no children).
Edward Jay Allen returned from Washington Territory in 1855; was constructing a railroad in Virginia when the Civil War broke out; was a colonel of the 155th Volunteers, Penn, in the Civil War; and became secretary and treasurer of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company. Aside from his time in Virginia and Civil War duties, he lived in Pittsburgh for the rest of his life.
His grandson, (William) Hervey Allen, became well-known in the 1930s as the author of the historical novel, Anthony Adverse.
