Peter Downey arrived in New Orleans, LA from Ireland aboard the ship Archelaus in 1848. In 1850 both he and Catherine Allen, his future wife, lived in the then City of Lafayette (now part of New Orleans) in what must have been a duplex since two families lived in the house. Peter lived with the family of a drayman and was employed as a driver. Catherine, who gave her birthplace as Ireland, lived with the family of an apothecary. They were married in 1852. Their son Michael was born the same year. Peter died at age 29 in New Orleans in the yellow fever epidemic of 1853. I do not know what happened to Catherine, although Michael's death certificate states that he was the son of Peter Downey and Catherine Fox so perhaps she remarried after the death of Peter. I have been unable to find any more information on her. Peter and Catherine's son Michael married Agnes Lynch on August 20, 1877. Michael died March 27, 1921 in New Orleans. Agnes was the daughter of John and Mary Lynch, both natives of Ireland, and was born in Feb. 1858. She died Mar. 6, 1939 in New Orleans. Michael and Agnes' child William Downey married Ella Bingham and their son Thomas Frederick married Dorothy Rosemary Wingerter.
I would appreciate any help or information that anyone could give me. I would be happy to share with anyone what I have.
