Tim, No apology is needed. Many names that are in the census are not accurate.Just look at the 1850 Lorain Ohio census, George's wife is entered as Anna and not Hannah. It seems to be very common in the early days of the census.
Here is what I know. Most is compiled from family records, Church records and Town records. Most of which was researched by my uncle. His work inspired me to go deeper into the 'unknown' portions of the Allen family that moved west.Once moved out of Vermont, no further contact is between to Vt Allens and the Ohio Allens of that time.
Reuben Allen, born April 15, 1790 to Elijah and Hannah (Hamilton) Allen.I am currently looking for the birth record and have narrowed it down to Brookfield, MA.If the Town Clerk will return my e-mails, I might get the confirmation I am looking for. Elijah Allen was from Bridgewater, MA and Hannah Hamilton was from Brookfield and the Hamilton family was apparently well to do at the time. Reuben married Pearly Smith on January 5, 1812 according to the Justice of the Peace record of Craftsbury, Vt. Here is where my physical info on Pearly ends.I was using conjecture that Pearly and her mother Mahitubal were residents of Craftsbury based on the 1810 census of Craftsbury showing Mahitubal and one daughter of the age between 18-25.If there is empiracle evidence to the contrary, then I submit that my anecdotal evidence is suspect.
Reuben and Perly had three children while in Vt. Samuel Lewis Allen b. Oct. 6, 1812 (honeymoon baby) Lucy Maria Allen b. July 14, 1814 George Whitefield Allen b December 18, 1816
No further information regarding Reuben and Pearly was noted until I found them in Ohio on the 1840 census.
George Whitefield Allen married Sylvia Hoyt on Feb 17, 1841. They had one Child, Wyman Hoyt Allen in November 1841, (Another honeymoon baby), Wyman is my 2X great grandfather. Sylvia dies not long after childbirth.
George then courted and married Lydia Wheelock of Montpelier, VT on Jan 20, 1842. They had 6 children, the first being stillborn on March 4, 1844.
Parden Allen (f) b. 1846. Alma Carlista Allen (f) b. June 29, 1850 Eliza Allen (f) b. 1851 George Allen II, (m) b. 1852 Nancy Allen b. (f) b. 1854
Then sometime around 1856, George divorces Lydia, leaves Wyman at 18 to run the family farm and moved to Ohio.
Until I found the divorce record and subsequent census, historical records on Ohio, it was generally thought that George died, and not divorced then moved.
If there is any more info that I can supply on the Vt. Allens then let me know.I also have information of the earlier Allens back to the arrival of George and Samuel (son) on this continent in 1622 in Massachusetts.
