Edna, there were (at least) 2 Allen/Allan families in Banks County Georgia during that time span. My 4th great grandfather is Thompson Henson Allen born about 1844 in Gilmer Co GA and his older brother William Elbert Allen born 9 Feb 1833 had a HUGE family and loved to travel. His family was in Banks County for quite awhile.
I looked on the 1880 census and I found both the Allans with an 'a' and the Allens with an 'e' living very close to each other, and the names were spelled differently. Soooo this leads me to believe that James Henry is not from the Allans with an a.Just to make sure, I checked my sources from that well documented line, and they did not have a James Harris.
I know the line of William Elbert line very well, and I do not know of either a Harris James or James Harris Allen!
Soooo, I went to the 1850 census and found him in Habersham, Georgia living next door to William Shore. Now Banks wasn't formed until 1859 from parts of Habersham and Franklin Counties, so it is highly possible that they didn't move at all.The thing is is that I didn't see any other Allens living close by.....
I do know that Sarah's brother William Columbus marries Mary Ann Carter and their daughter Mary Ann Shore married Elias Sosebee Carter, and THEIR daughter Nezzie Carter married Henry Lee Allen, one of the youngest son of the above William Elbert Allen.Whew!
That still doesn't tell you anything though....There is also another Allen family that comes into Franklin and Banks County, but it is a little later. My Ex-father-in-law's mother was Veda Allen and they lived in Banks Co GA but it was in the 1920's and 1930's.
Do you know of a male Allen descendant of this line that would like to join the Allen DNA project? This is really a stumper!I work in Banks County and I'm there at least 4 out of 7 days and I've worked so much on these Banks County lines I thought I knew every line of the censuses from memory! This Allen totally escaped me! cheryl
