Searching for information on MOSES ALLEN who came along with his brother, Hiram to Amity township, Livingston County, IL in 1837.Moses first wife was Elizabeth who apparently died after 1851 as there was a daughter, Hester, born in 1851.
Moses married Sophia Hallam 26 April 1858 and the family appears in the 1860 census of Livingston County.
The 1870 census shows Sophia Allen married to Samuel Thomas Swihart. They were married 9 September 1867 in Livingston County. They had three daughters living with them: Mary Allen b. ca 1859 and Jennie Allen b. ca 1865 and Anna Swihart b. ca 1868.
The Swiharts were still in Livingston County in the 1880 census, Mary and Jennie Allen were listed as step-daughters,but Anna was not listed.By 1885, Samuel Swihart was in Grayson County, Texas and married Margaret Lucille McDonough on 12 December 1885.
It is believed that Moses Allen is the same Moses that died in Andersonville prison about 1865.He was a private in an Iowa regiment and was captured soon after enlisting. This would coincide with the remarriage of Sophia.
Now, the mystery is what happened to Sophia and little Anna? The Livingston County birth and death records have been carefully searched and there is nothing to indicate that they died after 1880.
I am actually researching the Swihart family. For many years, we knew that Samuel was married twice but we knew nothing about the first wife.
I would like to hear from someone who is decended from Mary or Jennie Allen or other children of Moses Allen who might be able to give me more information about Sophia and Annie.
