I have conflicting information on my gg-grandmoter, Lydia Allen, of Independence Co. Ark. I have one source that says she came from Virginia and was married to a Deaton, no first name given. The source by a very reputable Ozark historian says that she came to the Ozarks before Arkansas became a territory as a chain bearer in James Trimble's survey crew. Her arrival with the Trimble survey team isis well-documented because they laid out the town of Batesville in 1812. It is the second-oldest English-speaking settlement west of the Mississippi River.
No. 2 source says says that Lydia Allen was born in NC and was the daughter of Samuel Allen and Elizabeth_____. Shem. ___Deaton, doesn't say where. Supposedly they had their children in TN, and their daughter (my ggm) Zilpha m. Seth Lewis Burge in TN. This is not our Lydia and Seth, since our family records show that Lydia was living in Arkansas ca 1812, and daughter Zilpha married Seth in Arkansas (this was a second marriage for each of them and it is recorded in AR); We know that Seth's family was originally from MS but moved to Arkansas in the 1850s.
I'm wondering if there was a Lydia Allen in this Samuel Allen family, and our Lydia somehow got plugged in as this Lydia. The information on her is very incomplete and incorrect, even listing her AR grandchildren as being born in MS. Fortunately Lydia's line information stops there. The rest of the Samuel Allen geneology is very complete and their documentation seems to be in order. However, their documentation on this Lydia claims to be from an Independence Co. roll dated 1900.
I would appreciate any evidence that these two conflicting people are the same person and information as to how the conflicts happened. Did my family descend from Samuel Allen or is Lydia an Eastern Band Cherokee as rumored or is her mother Elizabeth_______ an Eastern Band Cherokee who married Samuel Allen.
Any clues to this mystery will be greatly appreciated.
